New Passport Procedures from 1 July 2008
New Passport Application Forms
New passport application forms will be introduced on 1 July 2008. Current forms can continue to be used until 30 September 2008 but, after this date, only the new forms will be accepted by the embassy.
Australians in possession of valid 10 year passports or 10 year passports that have been expired for less than 12 months are encouraged to use passport renewal short form when they apply for new passports. Provided eligibility for the short form is established the only supporting documentation required when lodging a renewal form is the passport being replaced.
New Application Procedures
From 1 July, where a full application is required (rather than the short form renewal option described above), the new passport application form requires the applicant to provide the original of either their full Australian birth certificate or their Australian Certificate of Citizenship in support of their application as proof of their Australian citizenship. Passports that have expired more than 12 months previously will no longer be accepted as proof of citizenship.
If your Australian passport has already expired or is due to expire within the next 12 months, you should consider lodging your application for a replacement passport as soon as possible.
New Passports Fees
The cost of an ordinary Australian passport for an adult will increase from A$200 to A$208 on 1 July 2008. The costs of other Australian travel documents will increase proportionately.
